Uruguay has a good and effective Insurance sector. After the liberalization of the industry in 1993, which ended the
monopoly of state insurer Banco de Seguros del Estado (BSE), several
private insurance companies entered the industry, with a total of 16
registered companies at the end of 2012. The industry is highly
competitive; BSE still accounted for 69.3% of the total gross written
premium in 2012, leaving smaller companies to compete on price and
targeting niche segments to grow and maintain profitability and market
share.
Uruguay’s insurance (Seguros) industry, once monopolised by state-run Banco de Seguros del Estado, is gradually presenting opportunities for insurers, particularly those who can capitalise on the non-life sector’s growth potential.
Many of the Insurance companies in Uruguay are located in the capital city Montevideo
